It struck me as so ridiculously arrogant that Harlan felt so confident in his essentially. And then it turns out he was right to feel that way. Only for that feeling to be right too late and close to the end of that indispensability. Tsk tsk

Harlan is so smart and cocky but very short sighted. He’s barely trying at all to try to figure out how to ‘close the circle’

Harlan is a man crazy in love!! Watch out for him!!
So crazy if the eternals are so smart and need observers to be robot like why not just get robots lol
Also in this chapter there’s the “ not where but when” line and today it’s hard to take that line seriously.
This chapter ends with a nice line about him doing this for himself not for her that I really liked

Hmm… Poor Harlan… he needs to get out more. Gain perspective. Read. Something. How could he have fallen right into Finge’s bidding… but also… is Finge behaving in an illogical way?
Maybe there was an emotional connection between Harlan and Noÿs and not just a calculation?
Although Finge’s taunting of Harlan’s belief that she’d give such a plain guy the time of day makes more sense…

I can’t really begin to understand why Harlan would be all that happy to find that noÿs now does not exist

Interesting exposition so far. We finally get a tinge of curio in that they can’t travel between the 70,000 and 150,000th century and can’t really explain why

An annoyingly convoluted first chapter. And is this setting up a romance through time? Should I kill Asimov?
