Carl Jung, one of the great thinkers of modern psychology, wrote to a Jewish student:

In the deities of Greek mythology. Atheists choose this beliet not because they are foolish but due to convenience, as it exempts them from subservience to a Divine Power. It is much easier to choose an infantile belief in a "Chance of all Chances" than to follow the logical approach that proves the existence of a "King of all Kings!"

This understanding is also the secret to serving G-d with joy. As long a you view yourself as separate from G-d, you will suffer perpetually fom the dissonance between your ego and the divine will.

But if Bar Kokhba were to appear in Israel today, he would speak the same Hebrew language and share the same culture, religion, and national aspirations as its contemporary residents. If Moses himself would walk into a synagogue in London and see men in tefillin, he would know exactly what they were doing and feel comfortable to join.

When a person was raised on a certain ideal and dedicated their life toward it, they identify entirely with that ideal, even more than they identify with physical life. Therefore, when given a choice, they prefer this idealistic existence over their current trivial one. In these cases, sacrificing their life is not about nullifying themselves; to the contrary-It is the ultimate expression of their idealistic self.

These are the feelings of our youth today. They refuse to believe that we are a "pregnant" nation carrying an invisible treasure. They do not want to accept the fact that every Jew carries a "fetus" inside, a G-dly soul waiting to be born. It is easier to attribute the strange sensations of our nation the "nausea" of our inner conscience; the cravings to spirituality;

The state of the Jewish nation in exile-and of Jewish youth sunk in the depths of assimilation-has been compared by our prophets to pregnancy...
She doesn't realize that within her body rests another body, waiting for the moment when it will be born. Only an ultrasound, which will reveal the avements of the fetus hidden within her womb, will dispel her confusion place it with joy.

"This is the root of the problem. If being Jewish means being rengious, then as a secular Jew, I am not Jewish! And if somehow, I still have this gut feeling that I am Jewish, that means I am religious, which I am not.
How do we get out of this mess?

"My colleagues!" the teacher concludes. "We have a choice. Either we can recognize that religion is an inseparable element of Jewish identity, or we can remain with the same identity crisis. I, for one, do not believe in religion and am not prepared to change my lifestyle in that direction. I am therefore confronted with the same dilemma: I am a Jew, but with what?!"

Chassidut does not demand that we sacrifice our lives for G-d. To the contrary, it teaches us how to truly be aliveto live a life fused with G-d's desire. There is no greater pleasure than the feeling of merging your "" with the Divine Will. It is a life in which you are "bold as a leopard," where you uncover your inner identity and peel off the layers of goat-like illusions.
