The Karkauns invaded the capital and ended up taking control and capturing around a quarter of the entire population. Elias unattached himself from his humanity and basically told Laia that he didn't love her anymore and that he was bound to the Waiting place permanently. The Night Stalker got the last of ¨The Star¨ and freed his Djinn brothers, and the book ended.

Elias isn't a very good soul catcher because he didn't finish his training before Sheava died, so he is trying but failing. A few souls escaped the waiting place and ended up killing some people from Tribe Nasur and Tribe Ara-Nur before Elias could send them back to the waiting place. Laia and Daren make it to Adisa, the capital of Marinn, looking for "The Bee Keeper".
