Only Susan Sontag could write about photography in this way. The opening essay, In Plato’s Cave, captures with remarkable precision the psychological condition and function of modern photography. I can't imagine that someone could articulate it so accurately.

The Taiwanese edition is translated by poet/translator Canran Huang , who I think is the ideal choice. In the second essay, America, Seen Through Photographs, Darkly, clearly shows Sontag’s dense, winding, and at times deliberately difficult style. Huang manages to preserve that exact texture in translation, carrying over the same sense of complexity and subtle resistance.
