Reg starts to snicker as the helicopter lifts off and begins climbing. Rory, sandwiched between Petey and Piper, eyes him dubiously.

“What’s so funny?” he demands.

Reg grins. “It’s a good thing Miss Johnnie ain’t with us. We stink.”

I laugh; we do indeed stink, like sweat, dirt, cigarettes, rotting leaves, and all the other odd scents you pick up in the field. Casey groans.

“You just had to go an’ say that. Now I’ll be thinkin’ about it the whole way back.”
