I don’t appreciate what the author implies about the relationship between the European colonial project and modernity. Yes, colonialism brought “Western” science to the rest of the world, but the author also presents modernity as including liberalism (eg separation of church and state), and the treatment of indigenous peoples was verifiably not liberal in this sense.

How modernization is presented doesn’t make sense. How can modernization be both the spread of Christianity and then include secularism too? I think the definition of modernity in this book is just the general concept of the new Western ideas of each period of history. For some reason this definition doesn’t feel satisfactory to me.
