They keep talking about how the scandal would be career-ruining if they got caught and maybe I’m missing something but I just don’t see it? Did they sign a contract with the NHL saying they’d hate each other? I just don’t think it’s that hard to understand that two people don’t feel how the media presents them.

I liked when Shane thrice repeated that Ilya wanted to leave his hotel to come to his apartment to fuck him. It really helped my reading comprehension. Good to have some clarity after Ilya’s unequivocal “I will come to your apartment and fuck you” from three pages earlier.

Yes, they pretty much did sign a contract. The NHL is a multimillion dollar business, and they and their sponsors reap a huge profit from game attendance and fandom. The integrity of the sport and Shane and Ilya's reputations as competitive athletes will be ruined not just by homophobia, but implications of rigging between Shane and Ilya if people find out they've sleeping with each other for years. Everything will be like a joke. That's the underlying context and I could cite stuff from the book but don't want to spoil things! Hope it helps.
