This is literally the first Redwall book that is not a reread in over a decade for me.
Also, I'm pretty sure I bought this when it was first released. I never read it because the post-Matthias Redwall era books largely underwhelmed me. Though that may also be due to me finally aging out of enjoying the series.
But I have a pipsqueak to read it to. And I'm so close to finishing the series that I just had to.

I don't know if I like how the narrative keeps ravelling and unravelling in the way it is. It just makes me want to compare it so far to Redwall and I'm finding it relatively wanting.
I will give it that it could still surprise me in how it resolves the whole mess going on.

At the risk of laying down spoilers, a thing happened in the last chapter that I was so completely underwhelmed by, it annoyed me. Mostly because I feel the older installments (such as The Bellmaker) did a much much better job at that kind of thing in terms of impact and emotion.
I do wonder if part of this shift is due to the changing definition of children's lit in the intervening years.

Illnesses for both me and the pipsqueak had stalled any attempts at reading before bedtime for the last week or so. Not for lack of wanting, only for lack of energy on all parties parts. I only just managed to resume recently. Luckily, the story is simple enough where it is easy for me to recall events to this point.
But I still disagree with the fate of the owl.

I thought our Redwall hero would spend more time in a jam than he did. And am actually a little disappointed in how quickly his main issues seems to have been tied up for now.
As it were, it's a better book than Pearls but falls short of some of Jacques greatest hits in this series so far. Though the ending could still change my mind. We shall see.

When you only read a chapter at a time to a kiddo for bedtime, progress will be slow. Especially during a time of sleep regression.
So far this has a lot of the hallmarks of a Redwall story I tend to enjoy. A hero held captive by bad guys and troublemakers galore. I'm not sold on the big bad, but there's time yet for him to increase his infamy.
