I mean I’m not looking to see myself projected in stories, any more than I’m trying to express myself when I write stories. No, I don’t think stories are necessarily universal because they’re read by very different kinds of people.

But when I’m writing an essay, I am asking myself all the time, is it true what I’m saying? I mean, it is really like that? And that is the same question as, can I say it better? (...)To write an essay is to feel immediately responsible to something that one calls, for lack of a better name, truth.

There is no intensity in a story which actually matches the intensity of what is lived. And I think we have two different views because you, in a way, you say you want to be carried away by the story. I’m saying I want the story to stop things being carried away into oblivion and into indifference.

we think of storytelling as a truth-telling activity–tell me the real story. We think of stories as bringing information(.)as revealing secrets(.)But we also think of stories as:‘that’s only a story’, ‘oh don’t tell me stories’–meaning don’t tell me lies. And don’t you think at the very centre of the whole enterprise of storytelling there is the fact that storytelling is an activity that faces in two directions?
