I started reading these books in 1996 and it took me until *right now* to think of this so take it with a grain of salt, but..Why not let the yeerks, the actual slugs, touch the cube and get stuck in a body of their choosing? If they want to be human they could do it Ax-style, getting several humans dna and blending it to a new, unique human. And then they wait with them the two hours and that’s it, problem solved.
