I spend most of my free time thinking about murder. The facts, means, motives, opportunity. My true crime podcasts are a lifeline to help me escape traffic.

I can't help thinking of true crime rule thirteen: Even if someone is the obvious suspect - which I guess was me for much of this case - continue to investigate if the evidence doesn't line up.

Rule number infinity...no, ten of true crime podcasts: Don't overwhelm the witness. I can't help but wonder if I'm making a mistake.

I'm not getting anywhere with polite questions. True crime rule number eight: Switch tactics if a witness is reluctant to talk. Be adaptable. You may come in with a set of questions, but you may not be able to follow them exactly.

This isn't one of my true crime podcasts, but I can't help trying to play detective. True crime rule number six: Always keep the suspect or witness talking.

In NYC, even though immigrants seem to be on every corner, at least in Queens, I still feel different. I want to tell her that she isn't alone, but I am her client, accused of an atrocious murder, and she is my lawyer, so I stay silent.

True crime rule number four: An investigation is sometimes a series of unrelated clues that only come together later. At the beginning, there's sometimes only breadcrumbs. Eventually we'll find the entire loaf of bread... I hope.

"I can go?" Surely there is some mistake. The officer shrugs as he twirls the cuffs in his hand, not offering me any answers. He's just following someone else's orders.

I pull up to a bodega, a hallmark of New York City. I make a beeline toward the drink section, seeing every snack I can think of crammed onto shelves as I go. Tell me you're having a bad day after you've had some Takis, I think to myself as I grab a bag.
