Have you read Diana Gabaldon's 'Outlander' series? I am not a huge series fan, but those are the best time travel books I've read. The first hundred or so pages in the first book of the series (Outlander) are a slog, but once you get past them, you can't stop reading. I've read all of the books in the series to date, but the first four were my favourites.

I did read those many moons ago. I absolutely LOVED the first four myself. The story went very 'political' and kinda down hill for me after that, but I really enjoyed her "use" of time travel.
