Life in the alley is simple but meaningful. Truth be told, we drink a lot of beer and wine together, criticize politicians, and laugh about the kids who have grown comfortable with a group of adults they know protect them, even if they don’t know their names.

Our enemies become the enemy, a subtle but substantive difference. Freed of comparison to us, the people we fear are generically, and entirely, assessed as wrong. Which usually categorizes them as inherently dangerous. Too dangerous to trust, too evil to empathize with. They, by our reflexive judgment and definition, are the enemy.
