THE QUAINTLY, IF ACCURATELY, NAMED PHILIP SON & NEPHEW was the bookshop in Liverpool in which I spent quite a lot of time, I've always liked bookshops, since I was a kid. I love the smell of them. I love the fact that all this work is collected together under one roof.

THEN WE WERE FIRST IN THE BEATLES, WE USED TO GET asked whether we were worried that we might have joined W the Establishment. We thought The Establishment was a club in London - which indeed it was. We didn't really know precisely what it meant, except that we were now part of the status quo. Of course, we insisted we weren't part of anything posh. We knew a few posh people, but that was it.

We couldn't write flops. That wouldn't have been right for The Beatles.
So, I had developed a knack for writing a popular song or a hit. (...)I had loads of tricks that I could use. One of them is shouting; that works. A shout is always a good song opener.

One night I noticed a very old woman in the front row, and I thought, 'Oh shit, we're going to kill her'. But there was no stopping, I couldn't stop the song and say, 'Cover your ears, love!' So when it came to that line, I looked away. 'Live and let...' BOOM! And she hadn't died after all. She was grinning from ear to ear and loving it.

I've never really thought much about my voice. I've been lucky enough not to have to. People say to me, "Do you use your head voice or your chest voice?" I say, 'I'm afraid I don't know the difference. I haven't analysed it'.

the idea that we were rivals was just something started by the media, and then people started to ask, 'Who do you like, The Beatles or the Stones?' And it became an either/or thing. (.)And it just wasn't true.(.) we were big buddies, forever and ever, but the fans started to believe there was some truth in the manufactured rivalry. There never was.

I've written a lot of songs, but certain ones stand out, and if I had to choose what I thought was my best work over the years, I would probably include 'I Saw Her Standing There'. No, I would definitely include this one.
I first played this song to John when he and I got together to smoke tea in my dad's pipe. (And when I say tea, I mean tea.)

I'm attracted to the binary. I state that quite casually, but I think there's actually a lot more to it than my just saying, "I'm attracted to the binary." Once you get down to the scientific biological level, in my core, I probably am the binary. All of us are probably more binary than we might realise.

I've had some pretty wild massages, and(.) I mean funny wild, not sexual. There was one in Japan where the girl came in and said, 'Please lie on floor,' so I lay on the floor, and she was giving me a massage. I started relaxing, but then suddenly she started to sing, "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.' I'm going,' Oh shit, where do I put myself now.' Thank God she didn't know the middle eight.

We recorded a whole bunch of stuff at Lympne Castle. Why? I don't know. I suspect because it was nearish to where we lived, on the way to Folkestone on the south coast. (...)so you'd get these kinds of slightly oddball things happening and oddball songs coming out. I'm a bit more purposeful these days than I was then. I was probably smoking a little too much wacky baccy at the time.
