The final scene in book one is worth the semi-slog to get there. The political scaffolding...sigh. That's the stuff of history books, even for the 19th century looking back at the 15th century. GE always seemed to eb concerned about projecting cerebral qualities.

Aiming for 50 pages daily. Slow going.

GE said, "I started writing Romola as a young woman and finished it as an old woman." Yeah, I get that. Poor GE, so cerebral and scholarly, so unable to forge a Hardy-esque connection.

Bright light, hot drink, stiff chair, pen, desk type of book.
