The eponymous STAG DANCE probably is the best piece of the collection. What a way to nail the ending. I'm reading this book on the bus to and from work, which is not always the right way to read a book but usually works well for chaptered work. It lets a piece breathe and gives you time to digest. I think maybe Stag Dance would prefer to be read in one sitting, but it feels perfectly paced and executed like this.

The skill with which the author slips into such different narrative voice and body between stories, conjuring world-first terminology that manages to make sense without even once attenptibg to explain what they are or mean, is the hallmark of a master craftsman. This is my first book of Peters' but understand the appreciation shown her work.
