I had to bring this up Simon is molested he is a minor molested by a man said to be in his 30s. I get it was probably normalized back then when the book takes place to have those types of interactions and I get why the book might it highlight the severity but idk how to feel that Simon’s first point of sexual validation and release is ultimately a scenario where he is a victim. It adds to his tragedy

I had to touch on this but it’s so off putting how normalized for lack of a better term the predation that surrounds Simon is. Benny the owner of the club accurately identifies his age in so far as it’s a liability yo let him tend the bar but it’s not a disqualifying characteristic that prevents him from calling him cute. It’s just gross he’s a grown man calling a minor cute

Daniel has caused me have an odd reaction because his description of Klara as a lost cause it rubs me the wrong way as if because she doesn’t conform to his value system and he doesn’t respect her life choices she’s less than. Varya is there a background character in the book and her own life literally letting her siblings take center stage while she hovers in the background

This book was something I had no preconceptions about I just took it as it is which right now is an insane prospect Jewish kids in New York forced to confront their mortality and right now I’m seeing how each prediction of their death unfolds and rheir own way of dealing with it. I can feel the themes of generational trauma and just trauma in general. For while they know their deaths it’s clearly impacted them
