Death tilted his head toward me. "That's what worries you? Not the return, but her soul?"
I said nothing.
"Soul?" Death tsked. "The fractured thing it is. It's a jagged, crushed thing, the remnants buried within him."
I had not seen that outcome either.
"Her soul is in Samkiel?"
"What is left of it. Two beings in one. It seems Samkiel was strong enough to bear it," Death said and sipped his tea.

"No one has ever protected me like you do. I'm always the one taking care of everything and everyone else. You're supposed to protect the world, not me."
"You are my world." He pulled me flush against him and tipped my head back to kiss my forehead, his hand running idly up and down my back. "I’ll always protect you, akrai. No matter the consequences," he whispered against my forehead. "Even if I break the sky."

"Dianna will never choose you, even with all your conniving and fail-proof plans. She chose me and has every day from the moment she laid eyes on me. She left you then and never once looked back. Not. Once."

"You stole our amata mark, so I did the next best thing. She is my wife, my only, and she will never again be yours. Never."

Reggie smiled at me, and it was the first real one I had seen from him in a long time. "Bring your queen home."
I gave him a curt nod and shot into the sky, leaving the sound of thunder in my wake.

"Okay." I grinned, and to chase away the dark clouds that had formed in his eyes, I said, "So, how do you feel about being called my husband?"
His face lit up. "So much better. I never have to hear you call me your friend again."

I threw my head back and laughed. When I looked at him, he was just staring at me, dumbstruck.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing," he whispered roughly. "I just love you."

"Sami." My heart lodged in my throat as another realization struck me. "You planned all this while you were gone?"
He looked at me as if I had grown horns. "Yes. If we cannot share the mark, I want the next best option. I want everyone who encounters us to know who we belong to. I want something that can protect you when I cannot. I thought I'd made my intentions very clear?"

His brows drew together so tightly I worried about his face freezing that way. My smile was so big it made my cheeks hurt. "I'm kidding. It's yes. It's a thousand times, yes."

"I hope that's a serious yes because we have an enormous problem now."
I gave him my hand, extending my finger. "It's a yes. Now give me my damned ring."
