I am absolutely astonished at how in-depth this series has been. Charlie Higson is by far one of the best authors I have ever read, and the chapters I recently read are proof of this. He somehow pivoted this novel into a story of teamwork and camaraderie rather than the usual death and destruction that this series so commonly contains, and he does it well. Everything in this series truly ties together.

Charlie Higson continues to expand the already incredibly large world of post-apocalyptic Britain. The Races, the new rural areas, all of it is the amalgamation of the last 4 books, all coming together. Old characters meeting new, all fighting against the same enemy. Higson is truly a master story-teller.

As stated so many times before, Charlie Higson is truly an incredible writer and world-crafter. His skills truly come to life in this incredibly dark and dreadfully realistic series, and each of the characters are both realistic and emotional, making the constant death in the series both addicting and distressing.

The mysteries of this novel are finally being uncovered. It seems Charlie Higson has decided to finally explain the lore and history of the series, through new characters (which died off quickly, as is the common pattern in this series) and incredible events.

The way Charlie Higson writes is very interesting. Although the novels in this series are very dark and, honestly, quite disturbing, Higson writes his characters in an emotional and humanlike manner, making the otherwise depressing series readable and enjoyable. In the section I just read, this is especially evident, with Higson showing the backstory of one of his most mysterious characters.

This series continues its trend of darkness and incredible plot twists. In a completely unexpected move, Charlie Higson has reintroduced a character from several books ago, whom we presumed dead. And yet he has managed to pull this off in a comprehensive and believable manner, demonstrating his incredible writing and world-building skills yet again.

Again, this series continues to be an incredibly engaging yet cruel read. Every single time I open the pages of these novels, the stories of hundreds of kids, each crafted to be lifelike and emotional, flood out. The complete and utter destruction of society, measured in these novels, is so lifelike and yet so desolate that they are addictive to read.
