I kinda wish Tom hadn’t actually been a huge piece of shit, or at least that there was more nuance in the relationship. I feel like it would have been more interesting to see Jainan falling in love again after genuinely losing the love of his life. It feels like this book is just terrified to take any chances, deal with any complex emotion or present any ideas that aren’t completely black and white. Very safe.

Man these boys are way too nice. I hope one of em ends up having a bit of edge to them, they kinda feel like they have the same personality so far. Or like Kiem’s character is being a bit sanitized by the story, the personality people are telling me he has seems very different from the one I’m witnessing from him. But it’s still early, we’ll see if that ends up being true
