"If it's weird, it's important." in part one, the author defines his terms, tells us the limits of his own knowledge, why he's doing this: to address the weird and the strange in the bible. You know, those passages that you blew past because they didn't make any sense but you didn't want to stop to figure out what it meant because you wanted to keep reading? Why wasn't Eve scared buy a walking talking upright snake?

This book is a classic example of why we need to be good Bereans. I'm searching out the things he talks about and that's good. Here's my question right now: why are we talking about Athirat (a Canaanite goddess) and Ugarit (an extinct Semitic language closely related to Hebrew)? What does that have to do with seeing the Bible through an ancient reader's eyes?

Currently, not finding too much satisfaction in my reading, I've decided to pick up this bad boy. So far i'm pretty satisfied with it. He's covering new territory for me. When he said at the beginning of chapter 2 that he's always been "interested in anything old and weird" I was all in. Apparently Michael has been a hardcore Bible nerd since getting saved in high school 😄
