Why do I have the feeling that Etienne is not who Rebecca thinks he is?

He tossed his cup in the trash can and turned towards me. "Beautiful pearls!" Then he left.

What?

The MC, Rebecca, is a shallow, overly dramatic person, but I'm not sure if she's this way because she is trying to emulate Coco Chanel? I don't really know anything about the latter, so I couldn't say, but Rebecca is pretty annoying so far. I'm just hoping that she gets better soon, or this book is gonna be hard to finish.

Starting this one to get some of these NetGalley reads out of the way, but the tiny bit I'm reading so far is already sounding ridiculous to me.
