This is beautifully written so far.

This is also way darker than I had anticipated, and that's even considering the content warning. I was expecting more 'Dae Jang Geum' tonally than 'The Concubine.'

(I am not conflating Korea's and China's cultures by making this comparison, only providing an example that feels relevant to me)

So many books written these days have lost their metaphors. So it is nice when beauty is a consideration when reading a description of anything. Although a book where poetry lays at the center of its magical system can hardly be told without a lyrical touch.

Even when pain and cruelty lay at its heart at times.

I had earmarked this for the Goodreads challenge, but my urgency escalated when I realized this was written by a Chinese-Canadian. And I didn't want to wait for my library hold to come due.

So I broke something of a rule of thumb of not buying new books unless I read them and liked it. I didnt read this book. I'm hoping for the best.
