Rather dry until we hit around the year 1000. Normandy was a model for how William and his lot would alter Anglo-Saxon England into Anglo-Norman England, both politically and ecclesiastically.

A look at not only the Normans in Normandy/Conquest of England, but also the dynasty in Italy and the Two Sicilies. (Not an overview book. An actual history)

hawk the only bit i can remember about the Normans from school is a snatch of rhyme/song:

"William, great Duke of Normandy,
sailed here over the sea,
jumped ashore
too quick a pace,
fell on his face,
what a disgrace!"

that and the Bayeux tapestry.

(not far from where i currently live is one of the places that the remains of King Harold are rumoured to be buried).

tho I've enjoyed encountering a little of Norman life (as it connects with the UK and especially Scotland) in Marion Campbell's young adult novel series (starts with 'The Wide Blue Road' iirc).

I'm rather fascinated with change over from Anglo-Saxon to Anglo-Norman society in England. I've read a bit on it, but will be reading far more soon. It's not as cut and dry as many English nationalist texts want to make you believe. And King Harold Godwinson? One of the few historical figures I out and out dislike, the wee bastard.

Pia G. I've had my eye on this book for a while, so now I'm curious to see what you end up thinking of it. Hopefully it keeps getting more interesting from here!
