“but there, they had their wagon, their boundary against the world” and what is it about boundaries and protection? the trail was a boundary for the wilderness against the impacts of humanity. sibling dex has been breaking boundaries throughout their journey, uncomfortable and even damaging at first, but it has always ended well, and maybe that is commentary on how perception changes once one steps outside.
