So many long, long descriptions of clothing and jewelry and food and decorations. It all just blurs together.

I continue to struggle to understand what the author was trying to accomplish with this quasi Judaic/fantasy Italianate setting.

Oh good, misunderstanding number 18 that could easily have been avoided by just telling someone something the charger had no reason not to tell them, and in fact it is out of character not to. I wonder if the author understands how frustrating it is to have characters constantly do things this stupid. These people have every reason to trust each other and sometimes just don't.

So much of this plot turns on people keeping secrets from each other for no reason.

I just realized the main character has no personality. He does and says things, but there's no sense of him being a person on the page. He's just a vehicle for what little plot there is.

Still occasionally plowing through. I feel like the author has some fundamental misunderstandings about how fantasy literature works.

276 pages and not very much has happened. There is a LOT of talking, but it doesn't really either advance the plot or character development. It really needed a more ruthless edit, it could have been half this length.
