I’m optimistic that this will still be good but we’ve immediately lost most of the really cool elements from the first book, including everything about the setting and all of the characters except two

I’m still open to it but I honestly liked ALL the characters from the previous book and here I’m thus far lukewarm about the new ones, plus it’s very strongly going in the direction of the protagonist having a full blown personality transplant (down to being renamed, apparently), in which case it would have been better to just have a fully new cast. As much as I’d prefer to follow up with all the previous POV characters and their stories/lives, I loved them all so much that I’m sure a host of brand new characters I can love equally could be cooked up for a new story in the same world, we don’t have to completely reinvent perfectly good characters to shoe-horn in for continuity
