"he had an hour to kill before the saucer came" is psychically loaded in a way I think I can't interact with. unbelievable things happen to mr. pilgrim. he does not panic. he is not impractical. he opens a "dead" champagne bottle that does not fizz. he copes. they come, "paralyzing his will with a zap gun". I can sort of understand. i've watched devastating events unfold in front of me too

poor barbara. i sense a trope that many parents of book protagonists hold extremely adverse conspiratorial views about reality. I would take it as poorly as her. or would i have built the views of the anti-normies into a new belief system? not sure. never happened to me
