And THIS is exactly my problem with Jeff Wheeler. A woman does something strong, and next thing she does is go to a man and complain about not being protected. Wheeler is so in love with knight/maiden tropes that he seemingly can't help himself.

Oh no I just realized this is the same Jeff Wheeler who wrote the intolerably misogynistic Argentines books. Those started off so well and then eventually went off a cliff. I'll continue to give this a chance but I'm not hopeful.

This is such a satisfying, original yet kind of old-fashioned fantasy. It's just great.

I really hope something very predictable isn't being set up here.
