My fourth Mandel. This a backlist found at a library sale. Early writing and I can see the development of this author, particularly her style of putting a story on paper. Finally discovered who this way of telling a story reminds me of Joan Silber. Both pivot around an event, revealing background and characters without clarifying the event and its importance. A type of mystery without deaths
