Like the moon and the mirrors which feature so prominently. Chang’s stories themselves are a succession of echoes, or the infinite series produced by a three-way mirror, recalling and restoring an ancient interior sense of selfhood in the midst of modernist, wartime rupture and dislocation. Even if our times are different now (and I’m not sure that they are), a vision like this is both unsettling and satisfying
