Getting out from under the yoke of maximalist novels for the moment made me realize something: not one of my favorite fiction works, other than Fielding's Tom Jones, exceeds 700 pages. All my favorites are in the 200-300-page range. Nonfiction is different. There are many long books of non-fict I love. Maybe in future no more maximalist novels?
