The protagonist, Rick Deckard, started his morning by arguing with his wife about the numbers to dial on their Pendfield mood organ. A device to stimulate artificial emotion. After much effort, Rick comforted his wife and dialled a number on their organs, both of which were suitable for their day. He ascended to the roof to be ready to head out for work.

When Rick unlocked his door, his superior, Harry Bryant, informed him that the chief bounty hunter, Dave Holden, was seriously injured and told him to meet him in Dave's office at nine-thirty. Rick's secretary walked in as Rick entered his office. Telling him it must have been one of those new Andys with Nexus-6 brain. Harry complained about it to the WPO in Russia before Nick came in.

A rock glazed Isidore's arm during his fusion with Wilbur Mercer. After he released the handles from the empathy box, he went to the toilet to tend to his wound. He heard a muffled TV set droning from a level below. He was exhilarated. Opening the refrigerator, he took a cube of margarine and started heading down to greet his new neighbour.

As Isidore turned off the annoying TV, silence struck him from all sides. He felt lonely in the desolate, dilapidated apartment. He tried to head out for work to sweep it under the rug. Started experiencing the strenuous ascent of Wilbur Mercer.

And the radioactive dust was helping this propaganda as well. Since John didn't have a working clock, he was waiting for the time signal from the TV, so he could go to work on time.

Nick's Barbour suggested that he could buy a cat if he couldn't pay for a real sheep. Nick told him he didn't want a domestic animal. He wanted a large animal like a sheep, cow or horse. Barbour didn't listen and replied that Nick could even get a mouse or a cricket. Rick was annoyed and said that his horse may have died the same way as Groucho. After that, Rick headed off to work.

As Nick went to the pasture on his roof, he met Bill Barbour, the owner of the adjoining pasture. They started chatting about the animals they had. It revealed that Nick used to have a real sheep, but it died because of tetanus. The fake one he had was Groucho's replacement. Since Barbour's horse was going to foal. Nick asked him if he could sell the colt to him in a ten-month instalment.
