After being overwhelmed by her first romantic relationship, Jane will not lose herself for someone else, "I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself."

She asserts her character and is not afraid to critique displays of misogyny made by Rochester. Hate that man! I find the story refreshing and ahead of its time.
