It'd be husbandly of me to ask what encouraged her to run, but I'm not going to. Don't think it matters. Our marriage isn't going to last. Our union will be just long enough to assure me she knows what she's doin' with my dogs. The woman will be a rich widow by the end of the day with a sled stocked with provisions and a gaggle of dogs. Thinkin' that's a high leap from the gutter of sorrow she's wallowin' in now.

"Consequences are expensive. I'm done payin' for 'em. The chief taught me this lesson in frugality. He said standing down is the most affordable option." Avery is my absolute favorite character of all time. I am so glad he has Odedeyan, his healer and patient teacher. Poor Avery. Proving he is a new man to the tribes, Jonathan, and himself is proving to be difficult.

The Screaming Man and Kshiwe/ First Man and Shadow. Both legends have been passed down from generations. White Wolf and the Ash Princess, is a newer tale but just as important. The Ojibwe were Keepers of Stories before their language became written word with the help of Father Baraga. It's blowing my mind how this concept expands in the coming novel, Something Old in the Snow. God is THE Master of story. God is good!

"She has my cheeks smooshed between her hands and she's shaking my head... I am looking past her to the sky. There's a cloud floating past her shoulder that looks like the dragon from the library rug at home. I am trying not to blink. You can see the shape shift if you don't." A nod back to White Wolf when young Jonathan told Izzy not to blink while she admired the library ceiling. He said the clouds would move.
