V: “Nothing settled. Nothing ever settled. Who could escape? Who could want to?”
Inherent Vice: “Does it ever end? Of course it does. It did.”
From 1963 to 2009, Pynchon seems to be circling the same question. What the young writer experienced as endless, the older writer understood as doomed. How can we escape history? The answer is that history escapes us first. Bless the rebel soul in every iteration.

Sure I should explore other books and writers but nothing else scratches the itch. Avoided reading this solely because I couldn’t find a copy without that awful cover. I haven’t really kept the goodreads updated but I’ve been reading a LOT of Pynchon. Since reading Gravity’s Rainbow last year I felt none of his writing really approached that level. Very early to call but this rivals it. Breathtaking start.
