This has been a tough read, especially as I've had a lot going on in my personal life. But I'm getting there...

Finally finding my rhythm with this book. It turns out what I thought would be 800+ pages of serious, philosophical Victorian literature is just one very, very, very long gossip session. The townspeople of Middlemarch immediately know everyone's business as soon as it happens, and their commitment to meddling is impressive.

Slowly getting there. Dorothea deserves so much better and she has no idea. Casaubon, my god. What a hideous character. His emotional coldness mixed with a deep insecurity that makes him demand praise is just too much at times. I'm not really in the headspace to be reading about emotionally abusive men, but I've committed to this book so there's no turning back now.

Good for you. A friend just completed an audio version and once they got into it - 200 pages - loved it very much. One group recently named it the greatest English novel.

I hope things become a little gentler for you soon, Arielle! And honestly, being 684 pages into Middlemarch already feels like an achievement. I'm cheering you on as you make your way through those final pages.☺️
If Proust doesn’t usher in my expiration I want to read or audiobook Middlemarch this year too, Arielle 🌿
I hope you do, Murray! I'd love to hear your thoughts. I've finally finished Middlemarch and now need to write a review. The book was more work than I expected, mostly due to difficulties in my personal life making it harder for me to focus. But overall the work was quite lovely and emotional, genuinely a great work of art.
