Not to be repetitive, but I’m really enjoying this. There is a coldness and a grimness to the writing that I don’t associate with this author at all. This feels like someone completely different who is intimately versed in the nature of suffering. Disturbing but very compelling.

Jumping forward almost 35 years in Murakami’s writing career from Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973 his prose style here is so minimalist and focused on the emotions of the characters. It might be to do with the translation as well. I really like it but I miss those rich descriptions of the environment. I’m hoping there’ll be some down the line.
