Philip tells the archbishop of Canterbury the story of what’s going on and he agrees with Phillip that it cannot happen but says he can’t do anything until he’s restored back in England to Canterbury

He says he and the King are in agreement on terms. Only the King won’t give him the sign of peace yet so the archbishop worries it may be a trap.

Phillip goes to talk to his bro Frances who works for the King

Chapter 18:

Phillip receives a letter from the King - he wants to make Waleran the 3rd highest ranking archbishop in the Church of England and elevate ArchDeacon Peter to be Bishop of Kingsbridge - all the monks say no way, but what can they do?

Phillip decides to go see the archbishop of Canterbury exiled in France - he is at odds with King and may be an ally

Ellen goes on to tell the story of her first husband, Jack Cherbourg and how Waleram helped to frame him for personal gain

Remigus is there to back up her story since he was in the priory back then - other monks back up the story

Archbishop Peter closes the case - Jack tell at Waleran wanting to know why he killed his father

Jack and Jonathan urge Ellen to come testify at Phillips trial that Jonathon is not his son

The only way to get Filipp out of trouble is for Jonathan to prove who his real father is because you can’t prove a negative (that Filipp isn’t his father)

Jack tells him he remembers finding a baby in the forest before they arrived at Kingsbridge when they saw the same baby in the Priory - his mother Ellen tells them about Tom’s original wife Agnes dying in childbirth

Waleran brings charges against Phillip that Jonathan is his illegimate son

Phillip fears that everything he is built here in Kingsbridge will come crashing down because his arch nemesis sits in judgment on him

Start Part 6 - 1170 to 1174

Kingsbridge Cathedral is complete - Kingsbridge has expanded and has suburbs now

Even William admits the cathedral is very impressive

William Hanley is made sheriff to circumvent Earl Richard

Richard kills Alfred as he’s trying to rape Aleana to avoid punishment he joins the crusades in Palestine

End of part 5

Some savage heathens attack Kingsbridge but have no leader and are easily defeated - Aliena has the idea that if Richard would lead the horde, they could go attack William and take back the earldom

A hurricane comes and destroys the village who was already suffering from a famine

Phillip tells Jack they have to lay them in off for winter early this year or they will run out of money
