I love looking at concept art so much; I’ve been thinking about it more lately and have just mentioned it a few times at a GR group. And I’ve personally found that as hard as doing concept art looks, once you start doing it, you realize it’s way harder than that.

F. P. I’m a very visual person, and my writing can be quite visual; I describe people’s body language, appearances, etc., quite often, although usually in brief ways. But I basically do that because that’s what I like in a read: I want to be able to get a clear visual picture of what’s going on in a narrative.

A bunch of years ago, I self-studied and worked on doing concept art quite a lot, because I thought that if I could do sci-fi concept art of the worlds that I have in my head, I’d be happy to just do that for myself and never have to write a long prose book again. I can easily sprint, but marathon-ing is too hard on me physically, takes way too much out of me.

Well, I found that I just wasn’t anywhere near good enough at doing concept art to put down what was in my head, because concept art, too, wound up being just too much work for me physically. I tried speed painting, but I’m just not that spontaneous a painter; doing drafting in engineering school made my already too-tight drawing hand even tighter.

Anyway, if you love looking at concept art as much as I do, and you’re also interested in doing it, here’s the great Feng Zhu channel that I used to watch--lots of very informative and instructional videos on it (remove all of the spaces in the link):
