Hey so Spanish person here and I need someone to explain how college works in the us pleaseee
Back here you choose a degree, which consists on a series of subjects that give you a certain number of credits. Once you have enough credits, you graduate.
I’m at a complete loss of what a major is. Help please :)

Thank you!!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼Trying to write about the us being from Europe is just so weird . And about the sats, how does that work too?? And acceptance to colleges depends on the gpa I think?
1) oof okay. SATs are basically a general test that tells schools how well you do on college level ELA and Math which scores out of 1600. Most schools now though are test-optional so if you don't take them, (depending on the school) you actually should be okay--just make sure you check if they are beforehand!!2) Yes, most of the time GPA (grade point average if you didn't know already) matters. HOWEVER you can't only be an academic person. Colleges won't accept you if you don't do any extracurriculars (eg. clubs, sports, volunteering etc) because they really want their students to be super smart AND well-rounded. Now, if for some reason you've never participated in a wide variety of extracurriculars, that's fine as long as you have
a) A senior project (something you did outside of school that benefits your community and made a significant impact)
-my friend started a 24 hour walkathon for cancer research (he got into EVERY SINGLE IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL)
b) a staple. A staple is a term for one thing that you've been obviously involved in forever (for example, if you are a STEM nerd, you started a robotics club, attended coding classes, won science based competitions etc. Even though it's not technically a VARIETY, it's something you are obviously good at and enjoy doing.)
c) a good essay. NOTE: a sob story about your life will not get you into any college, because let's face it, the person reading it prob doesn't really care.
-i had friends who wrote about their grandma's collection of wallpaper from every hotel she stayed at and got into MIT
-i had another friend who wrote about when they tried to build a functioning jet-pack with leaf blowers LITERALLY WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING INTERESTING promise you have something.
idk if anything needs clarifying but yeah hope that answers your question!! <3

So If i say I majored in English, that means the field i studied in was english, but it doesn't say what level of education i have on that subject.
Commonly, you will hear things like I majored in english (main field you studied in) and majored in Business (you took less classes for that area but you still earned the degree). That person would have two degrees, but one of them they studied for more.
hope that helps <3
