Hah, listening to this on audiobook, and I sort of snapped to attention, because the prose suddenly became really evocative and elegant... It was a quote from Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House. Don't get me wrong, I like Stephen King as an author, but Jackson is just another league. In my opinion.
