My favorite kinds of books are ones in which young teenage girls are thrown into a very grown-up situation with lots of responsibilities. Watching them navigate adult customs and priorities for the first time is so funny and real for me. It’s a nice way to remember that kids see the world differently and also to laugh about the strange things you start to do as an adult.

I adore the culture clash between two seemingly similar families… but also that the author doesn’t take sides. The buttoned-up family is a mess and the messy family is dysfunctional too. I do hope that Mary Jane realizes that it’s not only bad that her parents never praise her, it’s also a gift that they’ve taught her to take care of herself.

Genuinely can’t decide if we are more of Dillards or Cones.
