Is Sorrel the “she”? The ex-mistresses of the mad king (who died from mercury poisoning if I remember correctly) might fit the bill of the evil stepmother in this very different retelling of Snow White

Creepy…. I am 90% sure though that my theory of a mirror-opposite-clone of Rose being the one who died while the real Rose is held captive on the other side is right

Also the mirror distorts reality somehow, turns the reflection of someone who belongs on the real side into the opposite of what it actually is or something like that. Some kind of evil. Maybe somehow a not real version of rose came out of the mirror while the real one stayed stuck kind of thing
