He is so smitten when he first sees her on the back of a cart in the rain, he gives her his favorite hat and very nice gloves. He doesn't even know her name. Then she is helping a mare to foal at the place he wants to buy and asks her to marry him. She refuses, mostly because she wants to find her illegitimate daughter whom her father stole away.
