It’s strange that she’s not thinking to look for Caroline. Unless I missed something and it was definitely stated somewhere that she was dead. But I thought all we know is that she was sent away, to an asylum.

Annoying fake out on page 356, as I am pretty sure, at this point, Celestine is going to survive.

Hadn't homed in as much on some of the outright typos or other printing errors in this book, but I can't help noticing several on this page. (I guess now I am just looking to wank.)

For me, this book is panning out as a bit of a disaster, but I will still be thankful to the author for introducing me to the real life Ndugu M’Hali. Yes, I skipped ahead to the author's note yesterday, and went and found That Picture. Now I will never be able to hear the phrase "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" without feeling a little gross. Although Henry Morton Stanley is not a wholly untragic figure himself.

Why are these two characters being such idiots? My assumption was, and has been for the past 50 to 80 pages, that Agatha raped Celestine. Now with certain revelations, it might turn out to be different, but that’s still my going assumption at present.

Page 303! The first actual surprise that this book has thrown at me.

...it's a clonky book. I'd much rather be reading about Dikembe/Celestine than having to wade through Lowra, who is also clumsily written. I read her as Black-ancestry-and-knows-it and it took me a long time to figure out that she doesn't know. Jaye could have done a better job of conveying this. Instead I was left wonder why Lowra was being so dense about Monty's comments or reticence at any given point.
