this tale refuses to pull punches. People are deeply wounded or diseased, conflict revolves around child brides, adultery, incest, political revolutions, famine, rape, etc. I can't believe that for so long, I'm used to the punches being hinted at. That it could have been bad. And on one hand, I appreciate how seriously it takes me as a reader. The other, I needed a light read between other heavy books.

I want to enjoy this book, but ultimately I keep finding myself frustrated. At what I'm not sure. It will be in odd beats, like when a train starts to move and the carts sway before gaining momentum, only for that momentum to be abruptly stopped. This is with plot and character progression. I should trust the process but it has become a chore.
I try to move through it in chapters. I have now hit chapter 40/86.
