One of my read books has apparently disappeared off of my shelves. I am so tired of this sort of thing. I wish I'd gotten all my books over to LibraryThing.

Left Coast Justin Well, that stinks! Sorry your week ended on a sour note.

Lisa Vegan At least the missing rated book wasn't one that had a review but I'm still not happy.

Lisa Vegan In a way it's worse because I have backups of most of my reviews but of the books I've just rated I don't have them listed anywhere else. I'm not okay with how this happens so easily on this site. Even though I know my record would be incomplete and would be a mess I should try to do an import into LibraryThing. Members' book records are not tampered with over there.

Shalma Frustrating :(

Left Coast Justin You can easily back everything up here:

Open 'My Books'
Go to the bottom of the left-hand column
Click on 'Import and Export'
Export your booklist

You can then open the export file in Excel. The formatting will be lost but all the words, dates read, etc will be there.

I do this twice a year.

Lisa Vegan Justin, Thanks. I do that almost every day and keep files from the 1st of each month and the middle of the month, indefinitely. BUT I don't know how to find missing books when I have to many books shelved and so many rated books. It's only somewhat helpful to have the exports.

Lisa Vegan Shalma, Yes, it is.

Sherron Wahrheit So sorry to hear that. I know it’s annoying to get suggestions from the peanut gallery, but I’m so used to goodreads ”disappearing” my reviews, so I tend to write them offline and paste them in—with the original being my personal record. My background is in large-scale software like this, so I just want to add that all software is buggy. I am indeed sorry, and I know your frustration.

Lisa Vegan Sherron, Thanks. I also keep almost all of mine in Word docs.

This is not a missing review though, just a missing read book with a rating and I'll never know which one.

Here it's mostly well meaning but incompetent librarians deleting books/book editions and if they're not already combined, the ratings/reviews get trashed with them. The superior thing about LibraryThing is that nobody can mess with anyone else's record. Nobody can change the edition, cover, delete anything at all, etc
