Hail and Farewell

I loved today’s story—it celebrates the joy and gift of aging, rather than the fear of it.

The Great Fire—a bit of a weird one…

“Did you ever read that story about the man who traveled to the future and found everyone there insane? Everyone. But since they were all insane they didn’t know they were insane. They all acted alike and so they thought themselves normal. And since our hero was the only sane one among them, he was abnormal; therefore, he was the insane one…Insanity is relative. It depends on who has who locked in what cage.”

Sun and Shadow—such an interesting and necessary commentary on the relationship between reality and art.

Like all of Bradbury that I’ve read to this point, the writing in this one was simply spectacular. The descriptions of nature and sound were just spellbinding. Simultaneously, this is the first Bradbury I haven’t instantly loved. Is he saying that religion/faith is the same thing as “energy”? Is he saying that faith is simply feeling and being aware of connection to other people? Dissatisfying and strange…

The Great Wide World Over There—A very insightful but sad look at our inherent need for human connection and relationship.

A Sound of Thunder—an incredible statement on the interconnectedness of life, and the symbiotic connection between everything that exists! Profound and powerful!

The Big Black and White Game—is there anything Bradbury can’t write?! It’s astonishing to me how fully he can flesh out characters and themes in just a few pages… Big Poe and his team mates just leap off the page.

Embroidery—Yikes! Short, but packs a visceral and horrifying punch!
