Today I learned you hibernate tortoises in a fridge for winter! Temp should be kept at 5C, and the length of hibernation varies per tortoises. But my god, I was horrified at first, thinking sweet Hettie had died, then that these horrible people were freezing her. So I'm glad the author's note explained it, and an online search (BBC article) confirmed it. My God.
